Thamir Ghadhban. Iraq`s New Oil Minister

Thamir Abbas Ghadhban (born in 1945) is an Iraqi politician that has served in oil industry since early 1970s. After the war in 2003 he became Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Oil. and in mid of the following year. he served as Interim Oil Minister in the interim government. headed by interim prime minister Iyad Allawi. In 2012 he was nominated by Iraq to be secretary-general of OPEC. Up until early 2016 he served as the Chairman of the prime minister`s advisory committee.

On 24 October the nomination of Thamir Ghadhban as Iraqi oil minister and Deputy Prime Minister for Energy as part of the newly approved government of Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi approved by the parliament.

Ghadhban replace Jabbar al-Luaibi as oil minister.

Last week. the Iraqi Oil Ministry said Luaibi will become the leader of the Iraqi National Oil Company. which will act as an umbrella for the dozen state-run oil companies.

He is seen as a capable technocrat. well-respected within Iraq and by the dozens of foreign oil companies operating in the sector.

He is also not affiliated with any political party. which may mean Abdul-Mahdi has succeeded at least in part in a merit-based process for forming a government.

Abdul-Mahdi was nominated as prime minister earlier this month. following a May 12 national election that split the leading political parties.

It is a crucial time for Iraq. which is hitting record oil production and export numbers. and is planning to drastically boost output and build new refineries. both on its own and with international investors.
