Erdogan. Putin Key Gas Partnership

The presidents of Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdogan. and Russia. Vladimir Putin. opened Monday the first phase of the Turkstream gas pipeline. which marked a milestone in energy collaboration. explained official sources.

 

The protocol ceremony completes the 930-kilometre-long underwater section of the pipeline under the Black Sea. transferring the supply of natural gas to southern Europe from the Russian town of Anapa to the Turkish town of Kiyikoy.

Both leaders also held a meeting to discuss other issues on bilateral and regional cooperation. according to sources of the Turkish presidency.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Sunday Turkstream `is one of the most important strategic projects between Turkey and Russia. and will be the basis for long-term (bilateral) cooperation`.

In this way. `Turkey is becoming a natural gas bridge for southeastern Europe`. he added.

Russian energy giant Gazprom is scheduled to begin construction in 2019 of the second section of the pipeline. whose route could go to Bulgaria. Serbia and Hungary. as well as Greece and Italy.

In addition. Russia`s State Nuclear Energy Agency. Rosatom. will build Turkey`s first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu. southern Turkey. consisting of 4 reactors. each with a capacity of 1.200 megawatts.
