Tehran to Boost Electricity Cooperation with Dushanbe

Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian. during his meeting with Tajik Minister of Energy and Water Resources Usmonali Usmonzoda. said that his country is determined to further boost electricity cooperation with Tajikistan.

Iran is after developing its electricity cooperation with Tajikistan. Ardakanian said. during his meeting with Usmonzoda on the sidelines of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and stated. Accordingly. Iran is keenly interested in broadening electricity relations with Tajikistan.

Synchronization of the electricity system between countries requires establishing electricity connection. he said. adding. Presently. we are seeking to establish electricity ties with Tajikistan. implementation of which requires holding quadripartite ties with Afghanistan. Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

Tajikistan possesses the largest hydroelectricity electricity capacity in the world in a way that this country accounts for 15% share of hydroelectricity capacity in the world. he said. adding. If the required investment is made in this sector. the electricity produced in the country can meet the demand in the region.

He further pointed to the US sanctions imposed on Iran and said. US sanctions imposed on Iran have impeded the development of Iran’s regional ties with other countries.

For his part. Usmonzoda said. The 13th Iran-Tajikistan Joint Economic Cooperation Forum has opened a new chapter in bilateral ties between the two countries. the issue of which will have more constructive role in strengthening ties between Iran and Tajikistan in different sectors.

In March. Tajikistan`s Prime Minister Kokhir Rasulzoda. in a meeting with Iran`s outgoing Ambassador Hojatullah Faqani. said that Dushanbe is determined to increase economic and commercial relations with Tehran. calling for increase in volume of trade between the two countries.

Earlier in mid-February. former Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said that Tehran is eager to further expand ties with Dushanbe as it considers its ties with Tajikistan as familial.

Iran currently produces more than 300 TWh of electricity. mostly through its massive gas-fired thermal power plants.

Iran is currently supplying Iraq. Afghanistan and Pakistan with electricity.

Ardakanian said in August that his country had exported 2.3 billion kilowatts of electricity to the neighboring countries since the start of the local calendar year on March 21.

We have increased power generation as much as 1.800 megawatts each year since the victory of the Islamic Revolution 1997. he said.

Ardakanian further noted that over the past six years. valuable potable water projects have been commissioned in rural areas. as 10.200 villages joined water supply system.

Back in early February. Ardakanian said that the power generation of the country has increased by 11.4 times since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Ardakanian said that Iran has moved up 24 ranks in terms of generation of electricity in the past forty years.
