Iran. Japan Need to Broaden Economic Cooperation

Despite the US pressures. Iran-Japan relations have been at the highest level and the two countries` economies can be complementary to each other. Majedi said. addressing a meeting themed Developing Iran-Japan Trade Ties at the University of Tehran.

The former Iranian ambassador to Tokyo reiterated that the minimum ups and downs have been observed in Iran-Japan relations despite Japan`s membership in G7.

Majedi said that Japan needs Iran`s energy resources. including oil. gas and petrochemicals. adding that both countries can have close cooperation in the field of mine.

He reiterated that Japan`s advances in the field of auto-making are praiseworthy. and said that Iran`s auto-making sector needs an advanced automaker for cooperation to make progress and Japan`s auto-making companies are the best option for Iran.

In September. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met in New York where they underlined the need for expansion of cooperation on Middle-East security.

President Rouhani and Japanese premier met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s 74th Session held in New York City.

During the meeting. the Japanese prime minister urged Iran to continue its constructive role in the region.

The Iranian president. for his part. underlined the need for boosting all-out ties with Japan. and appreciated Japanese government`s efforts to help save the JCPOA.

Referring to Abe`s recent visit to Tehran. Rouhani underlined acceleration of implementing the agreements reached during the trip.

The Iranian president also appreciated Japanese government`s endeavors to maintain the JCPOA and urged enhancement of ties in all fields. economy in particular.

Japan is victim of nuclear weapons and Iran victim of chemical weapons. Therefore. both of them are opposed to mass destruction weapons. Rouhani said.

In relevant remarks in late August. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. before meeting his Japanese counterpart Taro Kono. said that both Tehran and Tokyo are concerned about security issues in the Persian Gulf which is a main source of energy supply to the Far-Eastern countries.

Before sitting down for talks with hosting Japanese Foreign Minister Kono in Tokyo. Zarif said he looked forward to discussions with Kono as Tehran and Tokyo have special interests in the security of the energy market and stability in the Persian Gulf.

It is necessary for us to engage. Also. Tehran and Japan share common views on nuclear non-proliferation and we need to have consultations about this to maintain nuclear non-proliferation. he added.
