Rosatom, IAEA Heads Meet in Istanbul to Discuss Safety at Ukrainian Nuclear Facilities

The general director of the state corporation Rosatom, Alexei Likhachyov, and his counterpart from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, met in Istanbul on Wednesday to discuss in detail, among other things, the safety at Ukraine’s nuclear power plants (NPPs), Rosatom stated.
The pair paid special attention to the state of affairs at Zaporizhzhia NPP, including in light of the wish expressed by Grossi for a mission of IAEA experts to be sent there, the statement said.
For his part the Rosatom chief emphasized that to Russia and its nuclear power industry ensuring safe operation of nuclear reactors was an absolute priority in the broadest sense of these words, the Russian company said.
“There is the agreement to continue regular contact,” the statement said.
Likhachyov and Grossi already met in person after Russia began the special military operation in Ukraine: in Kaliningrad on April 1. Then Grossi said that the IAEA planned a number of missions to Ukraine’s nuclear plants. The first one was carried out in late April, to the Chernobyl NPP.
