Amid the visit of the Saudi King to Russia resulting in several agreements to enhance energy cooperation. another Middle Eastern oil- and gas-rich state has voiced its intention to cooperate with Russia`s Gazprom.
Qatar has offered Russia to participate in projects on production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the issue of cooperation is currently being reviewed. Elena Burmistrova. the director general of Russian energy exporter Gazprom Export. said Friday.
“The Qataris have paid a visit and made such kind of offers. They are now being reviewed at various levels. Russian Direct Investment Fund [RDIF] also considers this issue. but nothing has been decided yet.“ Burmistrova told reporters on the sidelines of the 7th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum (SPIGF-2017).
Gazprom has two LNG projects in Russia. The Sakhalin II project is the first and currently the only LNG plant in the country. while the second one is the Baltic LNG venture. which is currently in the planning stage.
Qatar is one of the largest suppliers of liquefied natural gas in the world. according the figures of the International Gas Union. as in 2016 it covered 30 percent of trade by exporting 77 million tons of gas.
The announcement comes during this week`s visit of the Saudi King to Russia. which has already resulted in several agreements between Russian and Saudi energy companies.
Since June. the relations between several Arab states. including Saudi Arabia and Qatar have suffered from tensions with Riyadh cutting diplomatic ties with Doha and accusing it of supporting terrorism. Since then. the relations have not improved and Kuwait mediating the crisis. Moscow have called on the parties to peacefully resolve via diplomatic means.
