Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian responded to those who are critical of the country’s membership in the Paris Accord on climate change and said pulling out of the agreement would not be in Iran’s interest.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday. the minister pointed to Washington’s withdrawal from the landmark global coalition meant to curb emissions that cause climate change and said. “Pulling out of the agreement like the US will not be in our interest.“
Implementing voluntary programs based on the Paris Accord will help increase economic competitiveness and reduce national expenditures and pollutants in the country. he explained.
The minister further said those who are opposed to the Paris Agreement are not aware of the text of the accord.In this agreement. each member state announces its plans based on its own conditions. he said. adding that Iran has announced its plans based on the Resistance Economy policy.
The Resistance Economy means that the country’s economy becomes resistant against external shocks. he said. adding. “In fact. our economy should be such that it can withstand various kinds of pressures.“
Back in 2014. Ayatollah Khamenei sent a proclamation to heads of Iran’s branches of power and outlined general policies to boost the country’s economy and lower its vulnerabilities under a grand plan. dubbed Resistance Economy.
