Putin: Nord Stream 2 will not Influence Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed during the meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Helsinki that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will not influence the transit role of Ukraine as Forbes reported.  

“Donald told me his thoughts on Nord Stream II and said that he is worried that we will use it to no longer rely on Ukraine. We want to extend our contract with Ukraine. but it is based on what the Stockholm arbitrage rulings look like.“ Putin said.

As it was reported earlier. Russia`s energy monopolist Gazprom refused to abide by the decision of Stockholm arbitrary court.  Gazprom`s delegation offered the Ukrainian side to either submit amendments to the gas deal or to break it. Naftogaz considers such actions a violation and disrespect for the decision made by Stockholm arbitrary court.  Naftogaz refuses to accept Gazprom`s offers. The Russian company`s denial to obey the decision of the international arbitrary questions Gazprom`s reliability as European gas industry`s partner`. the message said. quoting Naftogaz`s Chief Commercial Officer Yuriy Vitrenko 

Two arbitrary disputes between Gazprom and Naftogaz at the Arbitration Institute lasted for over three years: the dispute on the gas debt – from June 2014 to December 2017. on the transit agreement – from October 2014 to February 2018. There are less than two years left until both agreements terminate (at the end of 2019).

The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce has granted the lawsuit of Naftogaz as to compensation for the volumes of transit gas that had not been delivered by Gazprom on February 28. According to the decision of the court. Naftogaz got a $4.63 billion compensation for the transit gas that had been agreed on. but not delivered by Gazprom.

As we reported the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has begun in Germany on May 3. Not all countries have given the permission for it. at the same time. Ukraine and Poland protest against the construction as it can strengthen Russia’s positions as the gas monopolist in Europe.

On May 18. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russia`s President Vladimir Putin met in Sochi. There Putin claimed that the transit of the Russian gas through Ukraine will be continued after the establishment of the Nord Stream 2 if it is economically reasonable.

Russia`s leading energy enterprise Gazprom and its partners intend to start implementing the Nord Stream-2 project worth almost 10 billion euros in April 2018. The 1.200-kilometers-long pipeline is to be laid through the Baltic Sea. linking Russia and Germany – bypassing Ukraine. Poland. and the Baltic States. The capacity will be twice larger than that of Nord Stream-1. The construction is to be complete by late 2019.

Reportedly. leaders of the USA and Russia met at the presidential palace in Helsinki on July 16.  Putin claimed that he had regularly had conversations with Trump over the last months via a telephone and at the international events. however. it is time to clearly talk about the bilateral relations and the main problems in the world.

Trump claimed that together with the Russian leader they were going to discuss trade. commerce and military issues related to nuclear capabilities. ‘Our countries have a chance to significantly better the relations.’ he said.
