Japan Still Seeks Exemption from US Boycott for Iran Oil

Japan`s oil wholesalers have repeated their demand. during the past three months. for being exempted from the sanctions imposed by the United States against imports of Iran`s crude oil.

Despite Washington`s May 8 exit from the Iran Deal formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and its move to give 90 to 180 wind-down period to other countries before it starts re-imposing sanctions on Tehran on November 4. many world countries endeavor to win exemption from US bans.

Tokyo has asked Washington to exempt Japan from the embargo. arguing it needs the security of a diversified supply. Japan`s national broadcasting organization NHK reported on Sunday.

The US has balked at this request and Japan has made little headway in talks. NHK reported while referring to the Iranian oil as the one accounts for 5.5 percent of Japan`s overall crude imports.

According to NHK. the Japanese government plans to continue pressing the US for an exemption from the embargo.

Few days ago. Director-General of oil. gas. and mineral resources at Japan`s Ministry of Economy. Trade and Industry Ryo Minami said that Tokyo is seeking an early exemption to US sanctions on Iran as among its highest priorities for national energy security. as well as for local refiners that need Iranian oil.

This is important to Japan to win the exemption. said the official while speaking in an interview with the Global Platts. the independent provider of energy information.
