An influx of almost £2 billion in investment to the Highlands was put on hold yesterday as a giant wind farm project missed out on a bid to produce power in the Moray Firth.

Google has become the largest corporate buyer of renewable electricity.

The facility. which it plans to install off the coast of Virginia by 2026. would be made up of 220 turbines.

The package consists of 1.600MW of agreements. including 18 new energy deals. which together will boost its worldwide portfolio of wind and solar power by more than 40%.

The Energy Information Administration forecasts power production from wind turbines will rise by 6% in 2019 and 14% next year.

The leasing scheme will enable the development of electricity generation capacity that is enough to meet the needs of more than six million homes.

The US state aims to ensure at least 3.000MW of solar and onshore wind projects are under development by 2022.

The number of turbines to be installed has been reduced from 19 to 16.

Scientists suggest that emissions of Sulphur hexafluoride. which is commonly used as an electric insulator. are rising rapidly.

The firm has installed a solar system made up of 256 photovoltaic modules on the roof of the energy-efficient facility.
