Iran’s Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI). in a joint project with the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) and a domestic knowledge-based firm. obtained Oxidative Desulfurization (ODS) technology for desulfurizing mazut. the main fuel used by large vessels and super tankers.
The accomplishment was announced in the last meeting of Iranian government’s cabinet of ministers where the body decided to order a pilot production of desulfurized mazut with the new technology. in a bid to assess the prospect of Tehran’s procurement of the product in the global market.
According to the report read at the cabinet meeting. the home-made mazut produced through this method has passed all preliminary tests.
