IEA and Development Bank of Latin America Launch New Open Online Course on Energy Efficiency in Buildings

The International Energy Agency and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) are launching a new massive online open course on energy efficiency in buildings on 4 November. This free course will empower participants to identify practical options to advance energy efficiency in buildings.

Building floor area could more than double in Latin America by 2060. which would have a dramatic effect on energy systems. But IEA analysis shows that deploying cost-effective energy efficiency measures can stabilise the level of energy consumption at today’s levels.

`This course is an important resource to equip policymakers and stakeholders with the tools to unlock the cost-effective efficiency potential in buildings.` said Dr Fatih Birol. the IEA’s Executive Director.

The course consists of four modules and covers the fundamental technical. design. policy and financial dimensions necessary to practically engage on the topic. It has a geographic focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. and will cover how building design can reduce energy waste. the benefits of saving energy. and the tools needed to deliver an efficient buildings sector. These tools include policies. codes and standards. data and indicators. and finance.

The approach is both cross-disciplinary and practical. applying foundational concepts to real-world examples from Latin America and the rest of the world. Anyone with an interest in the topic will benefit from the course. including policymakers. architects. engineers. financial institutions. think-tanks. university students and citizens.

On completion. participants in the course will have a solid understanding of the big picture as well as the tools to leverage their own expertise and interest to contribute to advancing energy efficiency in buildings.
