Global Wind Installations Fall 14 Percent in 2016

Though global installations of new wind turbines exceeded 54 GW. the total was 14 percent lower than the record broken in 2015. according to a new report from Navigant Research. The decline was pegged on a decrease in new wind power in China.
Vestas reclaimed its position as the top wind power developer in the world. followed in order by GE. Goldwind. Gamesa. Enercon. Siemens. Nordex. Envision. Ming Yang and United Power. Navigant said Vestas and most of its competitors experienced double-digit growth rates.
“The wind industry in 2016 had another stellar year with 54.3 GW of new wind capacity added.” says Jesse Broehl. senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “The drop in capacity installation in China. plus recent mergers and acquisitions. shook up the annual ranking and market shares of global wind turbine manufacturers. As a result. more Western turbine vendors are in the top 10 ranking in 2016 versus 2015—some with record capacity additions.”
Almost every global market beyond China experienced growth in wind development. including new markets in Latin America. Asia Pacific and Africa. The cost of wind power continues to be driven down by competitive power contract auctions.
