Japan’s largest LNG shipowner Mitsui OSK (MOL) is to order four conventional LNG carrier newbuildings to deliver transhipment cargoes from Russia’s giant export start-up. Yamal LNG.
The MOL orderbook stands at 17 LNG carriers. against a live fleet of 75. But a spokesman told LNG World Shipping this morning that the shipowner will order four additional LNG carriers from Chinese shipyard Hudong Zhonghua. `The four conventional LNG carriers are all to be ordered afresh.` the spokesman said.
The four conventional LNG carriers will deliver LNG worldwide. MOL will deliver the four 174.000m³ newbuildings to Yamal LNG in 2019 and 2020 and will manage them through a subsidiary company.
Fifteen ice-class LNG carriers will deliver cargoes from ice-bound Sabetta in the Russian Arctic to two transhipment hubs at Zeebrugge in Belgium and Montoir in France.
A joint venture between Novatek and Total. the 15.6 million tonne a year (mta) Yamal LNG project is due to produce its commissioning cargoes this autumn and to start full operations next year.
South Korea-based Daewoo Shipbuilding &. Marine Engineering (DSME) landed the contract for all 15 172.000m³ ice-class LNG carrier newbuildings that will deliver cargoes from Sabetta – one for Sovcomflot. three for an MOL China Shipping joint venture. five for Dynagas and six for a joint venture between Teekay LNG and China Shipping Development Co.
The azipod-propelled ships can break through ice 2.1m thick. Sovcomflot-owned Christophe de Margerie – the first ship in the ice-class. Arc7 series – recently completed its sea trials at Sabetta.
