MAN Diesel &. Turbo and Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) are to develop a dual-fuel. two-stroke engine capable of burning liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The MAN B&.W ME-LGIP engines will be designed to exploit an environmentally-friendly fuel in face of stringent emission limits. LPG offers similar environmental benefits to liquefied natural gas (LNG). and an LPG-fuelled engine will significantly reduce emissions. enabling vessels to meet the 0.5% sulphur cap due to come into force globally from 2020.
Bjarne Foldager. vice president sales &. promotion. two-stroke business at MAN Diesel &. Turbo. said: “MAN Diesel &. Turbo has previously experienced strong market interest in using LPG as a fuel aboard LPG carriers. but other shipping segments have also begun investigating this option. a general tendency that is growing.“
LPG is already widely available. and although there is no bunkering infrastructure to date. the infrastructure investments required are not as onerous as for other gaseous fuels. MAN Diesel &. Turbo expects a strong demand for LGIP engines for very large gas carriers (VLGCs) and coastal vessels from their introduction
With the memorandum of understanding between MAN and Hyundai. LPG joins the list of liquid fuels that can power MAN Diesel &. Turbo’s portfolio of two-stroke. dual-fuel engines. which are available from all licensees. MAN Diesel &. Turbo said it expects the cost of an ME-LGIP installation aboard a merchant ship to be extremely competitive compared to other dual-fuel engine types.
The development follows the announcement last month of plans to develop the world`s first LPG bunkering hub in Busan. South Korea.
