Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Russia is ready to continue transporting gas through Ukraine after 2024. However, the Russian authorities need to understand how long the transit will be extended and in what volumes. Putin said this during a press conference.
“We are ready to transit gas through Ukraine after 2024, but we must know what volumes. And for this, European consumers must decide and conclude contracts,” Putin said.
He also assured German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Russia will fulfill all its obligations under the gas transit contract with Ukraine.
“I assured the Chancellor that we will fully fulfill all our obligations under the transit contract,” he said.
The Russian president stressed that the Ukrainian gas transit route produces more CO2 emissions than Nord Stream 2. In addition, Nord Stream 2 is two thousand kilometers shorter than Ukrainian transit, which is much cheaper than transit through the Ukrainian canal.
