China Discovers 485 Million Tons of Shale Oil in Shandong Province

The Shengli Oilfield affiliated to Sinopec in Dongying, east China’s Shandong Province, reported a discovery 485 million tons of shale oil, and a shale oil reserve of more than 4 billion tons after pilot exploration, the state broadcaster CCTV reported on Tuesday.

The maximum daily shale oil output of a single oil well in the Shengli Oilfield reached 171 tons, a record high among China’s shale oil wells, highlighting the potential of the oil exploration zone.
According to Sinopec, aside from China, only US has the capability to extract shale oil at present. The Shengli Oilfield’s newly discovered shale oil reserve is likely to play a significant role in safeguarding the country’s energy security.
