Germany’s largest integrated Bio-liquefied natural gas (Bio-LNG) is set to begin production after the successful completion of conversion and assembly work at the BioEnergie Park Güstrow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The work involved project operator EnviTec Biogas connecting a 300,000-litre liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) tank to the plant.
The raw biogas produced at the site will be upgraded to natural gas quality before CO2-enriched exhaust gas is transferred to the LCO2 plant where it will enable production of 15,000 metric tonnes of LCO2 per year.
“The produced Bio-CO2 can be used in the food production and beverages sectors, for example, or in greenhouses,” explained Frank Hinken, Managing Director of EnviTec Bioenergie Güstrow.
Off-gas produced during the liquefaction process is fed to the combined heat and power plants at the site, where it is used to generate energy for self-supply.
Until now, the 500-GWh (gigawatt hour) biogas upgrading unit fed into the 25-bar natural gas grid. The previous operator required around 400,000 metric tonnes of substrate for this including sweetcorn, plant silage, cereals and grass silage.
Input will now be reduced to 150,000 metric tonnes per annum using mainly agricultural residues.
“Through this active circular economy, we are making an important contribution to a greener transport sector,” said Jurgen Tenbrink, Chief Technology Officer of EnviTec Biogas, which is based in Lohne and Saerbeck.
