France’s inaugural floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has successfully completed commissioning and commenced operations in Le Havre.
The FSRU, named the CAPE ANN and owned by Höegh LNG, was built in 2010 with a storage capacity of 142,500 cubic meters. It is operated by TotalEnergies and owned by Höegh LNG. It is expected to serve France for a minimum of five years.
This FSRU arrived in Le Havre in September of the previous year and received its initial LNG shipment from Norway. After the FSRU came online, it injected its first Megawatt hour of gas into the supply grid managed by GRTgaz.
TotalEnergies has contracted 50% of the terminal’s annual capacity of about 5 billion cubic metres, to supply it with LNG from its global portfolio. The remaining 50% of the capacity is to be marketed according to terms approved by the regulator.
The CAPE ANN is the second FSRU placed in operation by TotalEnergies, with the other FSRU, “Neptune” stationed in Lubmin, Eastern Germany last December. With these two FSRUs, TotalEnergies now offers a regasification capacity of 20 million tonnes annually, equivalent to approximately 15% of Europe’s total capacity and has become the largest importer of LNG in Europe.
