Southern Gas Corridor Project Allows Azerbaijan to Diversify Its Gas Markets

The Southern Gas Corridor (SGC) project allows Azerbaijan to diversify its gas markets. analyst at the Russia’s National Energy Security Fund. Expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation Igor Yushkov told trend.

Yushkov noted that for Azerbaijan. this project is a means of diversifying its gas export markets. while for Turkey and European countries. SGC is the means of diversifying their supply sources.

Greece and Bulgaria will receive one billion cubic meters of gas each via the Southern Gas Corridor. and about 8.8 billion cubic meters per year will be delivered to Italy.

The expert said that currently. Azerbaijan is the only source of gas for SGC.

`The resource base for the project is the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz gas condensate field on the shelf of the Caspian Sea.` the expert said.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority projects for the EU and envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region through Georgia and Turkey to Europe.

The launching ceremony of the first stage of the Southern Gas Corridor was held in Baku on May 29. 2018. while opening ceremony of TANAP’s Phase 0 was held on June 12. 2018 in the Turkish city of Eskisehir. TANAP-Europe connection was opened on Nov.30. 2019 in Ipsala. Edirne. Turkey.

Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) and Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) were connected on the Turkish-Greek border.
