Armenia Prepares for U.S. Talks on Landmark Transit Corridor to Azerbaijan

Reports are circulating in Armenia that a US delegation will soon travel to Yerevan to work out the details of a transit corridor that is a key element of the provisional Armenian-Azerbaijani peace deal brokered by US President Donald Trump.
Armenian news accounts, citing “well-informed government sources,” say the US delegation will arrive at some point during the week of September 8. “The American guests will discuss not only the technical and political details of the corridor [dubbed the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity, or TRIPP], but also the volume of investments, priorities, as well as the dates for the start of construction work,” according to a report published by the Armlur.am outlet, crediting a local newspaper, Zhohovurd, with breaking the news.
Armenian government officials did not immediately confirm or deny the reports. The official social media accounts of the US Embassy in Armenia have also been silent on the topic.
On September 4, the Armenian government reported that Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan met with US Ambassador Kristina Kvien, with the discussion focusing on follow-up to the peace plan signed August 8 by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev at the White House. A government statement did not specifically reference TRIPP, but mentioned the talks touched on “the prospects for unblocking communications in the region.”
TRIPP is envisioned as a 42-kilometer-long corridor traversing Armenian territory and linking Azerbaijan proper to its Nakhchivan exclave. Under the August 8 accords, an American entity is to oversee management of the corridor’s operations. TRIPP’s construction is widely seen as a potential boon for the Middle Corridor, an emerging trade network connecting Central Asia to Europe that bypasses Russia.
