French Unveil Large Hydrogen Carrier Design

A French quartet with huge gas expertise have unveiled a preliminary design of a 150,000 cu m liquefied hydrogen carrier.
Unveiled at the Hyvolution Summit 2024 trade show in Paris, gas containment system specialist GTT, along with TotalEnergies, naval architect LMG Marin and Bureau Veritas have provided details of a joint development project, which resulted in two approvals in principle.
The first approval concerns the design of a cryogenic membrane containment system for liquefied hydrogen (LH2) developed by GTT. The second is for the preliminary design of a 150,000 cu m LH2 carrier equipped with the GTT containment system.
“The ability to transport very large volumes of hydrogen in liquefied form, at -253°C, is one of the technological challenges to be met to establish a reliable, efficient and competitive hydrogen supply chain and, therefore, to enable an energy transition towards a carbon-free future,” a release from Bureau Veritas stated.
GTT is the world leader in LNG containment systems on ships with a market share of more than 80%, expertise it is now keen to develop in the nascent hydrogen trades.
