Gazprom Announces 15% Gas Cut to Italy

Russian giant Gazprom will cut its gas supplies to Italy by 15% due to the back-and-forth between Russia and Europe over energy supplies, the company said on Wednesday.
Following the decision to cut by 40% the volume of gas supplies to Germany along the Nord Stream pipeline on 14 June, the Russian energy giant announced what appears to be another retaliation against EU sanctions- a 15% reduction in gas supplies to Italy.
“Gazprom has referred to a limited reduction in gas supplies for Wednesday, amounting to around 15%. The reasons for the decrease have not been notified at the moment,” reported a spokesperson of the Italian company, contacted by the news agency Ansa.
Intending to offset possible gas shortages, the government is moving to replace Russian gas by signing new deals with African and Eastern Mediterranean countries. Moreover, Italy has a storage capacity of about 17 billion cubic metres.
On Tuesday (14 June), Stefano Besseghini, president of the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks, and Environment (ARERA) said Italy has already stocked 9.5 billion cubic metres of gas, “equal to roughly 52% of the total capacity.”
Audited in the Industry Committee at the Senate, he said that the goal is to reach 90% by the end of September. But he also added that the pace of stocking is slowing down.
Italian authorities reassured that the country has sufficient stocks to cope with reduced Russian gas supplies.
“The gas flow trend is constantly monitored in cooperation with the operators, and there are no critical issues at the moment,” Ecological Transition Minister Roberto Cingolani said in a short official note.
