Gazprom Cuts Italy’s Daily Gas Supplies by a Third as Works Begin

Russian gas giant Gazprom reduced its daily gas supplies by a third Italian energy giant Eni reported after the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in Germany entered its first day of maintenance.
Instead of supplying about 32 million cubic metres (bcm), the Russian company delivered only 21 million cubic metres on Monday – the day the 10-day maintenance work on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline started.
However, this was not enough for the Italian government to raise the state of alert.
“The reduction of 30% on gas supplies announced by Gazprom for Italy is equivalent in absolute value to about 10 million cubic metres per day,” the ecological transition ministry wrote in a note after Eni made its announcement.
Such a relatively small share of the total daily supply “is largely offset by the other supplies that the government has secured through the diversification plan carried out in recent months,” the ministry added.
In mid-June, Gazprom reduced gas flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to just 40% of its capacity.
The Italian government has already sought to diversify its energy sources to cut its reliance on Moscow, with Russian gas imports falling from 40% to 25% since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the government said.
Rome, for its part, is constantly monitoring incoming flows.
“There are no plans to implement energy contingency plans with extraordinary savings measures at the moment,” Ecological Transition Minister Roberto Cingolani reassured.
