Germany is projected to record greenhouse gas emissions this year since 1990 as the economy recovers from a downturn, according to a report by the environmental think tank.
Berlin-based Agora Energiewende said the country’s emissions are likely to rise by the equivalent of 47 million tons of carbon dioxide. This increase means that emissions in Germany will be about 37% lower than in 1990.
The country aimed to cut emissions by 40% by 2020 and hit the target last year, but only thanks to the economic downturn. The government recently pledged to intensify efforts to combat climate change and reduce emissions to zero by 2045.
The report is based on data from the first half of 2021 to project total emissions equivalent to 760-812 million tonnes of CO2 for the entire year. It also shows significant growth in the consumption of fossil fuels in the construction, industrial and transport sectors.
If confirmed, the German government will be required by law to take urgent action to reduce these sectoral emissions.
