Shipping major Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) on August 30 launched the second of Japan’s first two LNG-fuelled ferries. The ceremony was held at the Enoura plant of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The vessel, named Sunflower Murasaki, was ordered from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. and will be delivered in March 2023. It is slated to enter service on the Osaka-Beppu route and will be operated by Ferry Sunflower Co, a unit of MOL.
MOL has now ordered four LNG-fuelled ferries. In February this year, it announced orders for the construction of two more LNG-fuelled ferries. The vessels are slated for delivery in 2025 and will replace two vessels that Ferry currently operates on the Oarai-Tomakomai route.
