Tehran and Baghdad signed a deal on the exports of natural gas from the giant South Pars Gas Field in 2013.

Iraq and Turkey remain to be main importers of Iranian natural gas and Tehran is eying to increase its gas exports to its western neighbors.

Iraq is Iran'.s southwestern neighbor. and its port city of Basra is located in southeast of the country at northern edge of the Persian Gulf.

Over the past few years. Iran had been pursuing exporting natural gas to Kuwait. Oman and Iraq.

Iran'.s gas export to Baghdad via Khanaqin pipeline began in late June this year. Iraq and Iran have signed two agreements to transfer gas to Baghdad and Basra.

Iran and Iraq initially signed an agreement in 2013 based on which the Islamic Republic would export natural gas to power stations around Baghdad through a 270-kilometer pipeline.

The pipeline will address gas shortages in the Semnan. Golestan. Mazandaran. North Khorasan. Khorasan Razavi. and South Khorasan provinces.

.Iran does not need Turkmenistan'.s gas as it does not affect the country'.s domestic needs

Turkmenistan cut off gas supplies to Iran on January 1. saying Iran should clear its outstanding debts.

Pakistan demands Iran to decrease the gas price as well.
