Iraq has been importing electricity from Iran for many years after their power infrastructure was destroyed by decades of war and blockade.

Basra is home to Iraq’s biggest oil fields. and their exports make up more than 95 percent of the country’s state revenue.

Earlier this month. Iran has cut electricity supplies to Iraq due to unpaid bill. affecting Iraq’s Dhi Qar. Maysan and Basra provinces.

Iraq’s oil minister said last month Iraq and Iran had not yet begun exchanging crude oil. for technical reasons.

Iraq exported 3.490 million bpd of crude oil in May.

Al-Salihi also called on Turkish officials to be sensitive on this issue in their talks with their Iraqi counterparts.

Iran started swapping oil with Iraq’s Kirkuk on June 3.

The parties will discuss possible increase of oil production.

Most of the shortfall has come from Venezuela. where an economic crisis has savaged the nation’s petroleum production.

Iran is negotiating with Russia’s Gazprom Company for the development of Azar and Changooleh oilfields shared between Iran and Iraq.
