Over this period, petrol engines have seen a 40% decline, while diesel car sales have dropped by almost 60%.

That’s according to new statistics published by RenewableUK, which show that next year’s auctions for contracts to generate clean power could have a massive positive effect on the economy if the government takes steps to maximise the benefits available.

That’s the gloomy suggestion made in the Energy Institute’s latest Energy Barometer report, which surveyed more than 350 UK professionals from across the sector.

The wind farm is estimated to provide enough energy to power almost two million homes and save three million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.

The one turbine, 2.5 megawatt facility will be based in Wales and is set to come online next year.

Quarterly renewables share has never previously exceeded 40% of total electricity generation, according to the BEIS report.

The wind farm once finished, could power more than 1.2 million homes with green energy.

The two records were set over the weekend as renewable energy generation soared, coinciding with continued low demand due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.

More than two-fifths have spent less than £10 during the past month, whilst almost a third admitted they’ve not needed to spend any money filling their vehicles with fuel, according to a survey.

The work for the project is expected to be finalised by the end of 2023.
