Senate Foreign Relations Committee Head Bob Menendez and lawmakers from the UK, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Czechia and Estonia have signed the statement criticizing the American-Germany agreement on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline as Voice of America reported.
“We consider the Nord Stream 2 to be a geopolitical project aiming for extension of the influence of Russia in Europe at the expense of dominating at the energy market,” the document says.’
Earlier, head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), candidate for Chancellor of Germany Armin Laschet warned Russia about sanctions, which might include total closure of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in case of harm or aggression against Ukraine.
On July 21, the U.S. and Germany made a joint statement in support of Ukraine, European energy security, and climate goals on the results of the talks on prospects of the launch of the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The same day, Ukraine initiated consultations with the European Commission and Germany regarding the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which threatens the security of Ukraine and violates the principles of diversification of the EU Energy Union.
