Nord Stream 2 will be Completed despite Difficulties

The Nord Stream 2 project will be completed, despite the difficulties it has encountered, Chairman of the State Duma (parliament’s lower house) Committee on Energy Pavel Zavalny said at a press conference on Friday.
“Nord Stream 2 will definitely be built, all sensible people understand this. Ambitions of individual countries, the desire to promote their commercial interests in the form of LNG or the desire for geopolitical influence on everyone and everything, on Europe in particular may present some obstacles at this stage, but in the end, the Nord Stream 2 will be built anyway,” he said.
Zavalny noted that by now the main problem, which has to do with the technological possibility of completing the project, has been overcome. He pointed out that the timing of the project could be adjusted, though.
He stressed that commissioning the pipeline will help European consumers get gas at a lower price, since this route for gas supplies from the Yamal Peninsula, where a new gas production center is being developed, is much shorter than the existing routes.
Zavalny also drew attention to the fact that Nord Stream 2 will significantly increase environmental friendliness of Russian gas supplies to Europe. “Increasing pressure [for pumping gas through the new pipeline – TASS] makes it possible to transport gas very efficiently, which leads to the fact that the carbon footprint from transportation is 1.5 times lower than the carbon footprint along the Uzhgorod corridor,” he added.
The Nord Stream 2 project includes construction of two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 bln cubic meters per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The work was suspended in December 2019 after Swiss Allseas abandoned pipe-laying due to possible US sanctions. But in December 2020, Nord Stream 2 AG resumed pipe laying, building 2.6 km of the pipeline in Germany’s exclusive economic zone.
To date, more than 2,300 km of the 2,460 km of the pipeline have been laid, which is 94% of the total length of the pipeline.
