The OPEC Secretariat and the City of Vienna will jointly host the First Vienna Energy Scholar Programme (VESP) from 4 to 8 October 2021.
The programme aims to provide successful candidates with the opportunity to learn about the Organization’s activities with a focus on short-, medium- and long-term energy perspectives and policies. The energy transition and environmental challenges, as well as other important topics relevant to the energy industry, will also be addressed, culminating in a discussion with OPEC Secretary General, HE Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, on the future of energy.
Secretary General Barkindo emphasised the importance of the new programme in promoting education and raising awareness of the opportunities and the challenges that surround the energy sector among the youth.
“This exciting new programme is part of OPEC’s continuing efforts to enhance cooperation with our host city Vienna, and to provide a unique chance for students and young professionals to gain a deeper understanding of OPEC and the energy industry in general,” he stated, adding, “The VESP will help bring out the viewpoints of the youth – a key pillar of the energy future –, which will allow us and our Member Countries to learn and gain important new perspectives.”
The participants will spend one week at the OPEC Secretariat in Vienna, Austria. In addition, it is planned that they will be given the chance to further explore these topics in one of OPEC’s 13 Member Countries during the first half of 2022.
The VESP is open to university students aged 21-27 residing in Austria and citizen of a European country, with a good command of English. Further information on the application process and required documents can be viewed in the attached document.
The VESP will select 15-20 participants in 2021. Applicants are requested to submit their applications in English to the OPEC Secretariat at sgos@opec.org, no later than 30 June 2021.
