Turkmenistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan plan to set up a working group to cooperate in shipping Turkmen natural gas, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a joint press conference with his Turkmen and Azerbaijani counterparts in the city of Avaza, where the three countries had a summit.
“We are willing to take joint steps on Turkmen gas […] and decided to set up a working group to deal with the matter. The memorandum of understanding that we signed as concerns energy provides for the necessary foundation,” the CNN Turk television channel quoted Cavusoglu as saying on its website.
Vedomosti reported that the plan implies shipments of Turkmen natural gas to Europe. At the present time, Turkmenistan exports gas to China and Central Asian states.
Cavusoglu said energy cooperation was among the key items on the summit’s agenda.
“Diversification of sources and routes has become even more important for energy security. This situation has moved Caspian resources to the forefront,” he said.
The three countries signed five documents dealing with cooperation in the energy, trade and economy, customs, transport, science, education, and culture fields, he said.
