Europe Opts for Onshore Wind Projects

Europe saw new wind-farm investments amounting to 19 billion euros confirmed in 2019, according to WindEurope’s annual Financing and Investment Trends (published on 7 April).

Another 33 billion euros was invested in the refinancing of wind farms, the acquisition of wind-farm projects and other transactions. A total of 13 billion euros was invested in 10GW of new onshore projects, showing continued strong interest in Europe for these wind farms.

WindEurope CEO Giles Dickson said: “Governments and investors continue to have a strong appetite for onshore wind; in most of Europe, it is the cheapest form of new power generation capacity.

“The latest auctions in Poland, Denmark, Greece, France, Italy and Lithuania all testify to the strong support for onshore wind and its competitive prices, and we expect it to account for 80% of all wind-capacity additions over the next five years.”

Spain led Europe, sinking 2.8 billion euros into wind-energy projects in 2019, with Sweden and Poland emerging as the next largest investors.

Mr Dickson added: “Investors understand that wind energy is a good bet to deliver on the European Green Deal. Wind is generating 15% of Europe’s electricity today and is forecast to reach 50% by 2050.

“Had it not been for a sharp fall in new investments in Germany, 2019 could have been a record year for wind investments in Europe.

“The problem in Germany is planning permission; the rules are too complex, and it is unclear where they are heading. The government must clarify things to get investors back.”
