Iran planned to speed up implementation of petrochemical projects with the aim of increasing the capacity of propylene- colorless gas- production to three million tons in a year, said an official of the Oil Ministry on Sunday.
Deputy Oil Minister Behzad Mohammadi made the remarks according to a report by Iran’s National Petrochemical Company.
As per the planning, Iran’s need to propylene will be met soon and there will be no shortage of this petrochemical product, Mohammadi said.
Additional methanol at the units located in the Southern Iranian Persian Gulf region is being converted to propylene (methanol to propylene (MTP)) that can be transferred to the center of the country, he added.
Also, in the Northern Caspian Sea region, propylene can be attained through natural gas that can be transferred to Northern Iranian provinces, the official added.
In relevant remarks in July last year, Mohammadi announced that his country will increase its propylene output by three times after the opening of 7 new projects.
He said on July 29, 2019 that domestic production of propylene, a key hydrocarbon derived from oil and gas refining, will hit a record of nearly four million tons a year once a total of seven projects related to the product become operational.
He added that a current annual output of 900,000 tons of propylene, produced in two refineries and six petrochemical complexes, is only serving the growing domestic demand.
