Petrobras Partners with Shell to Build Test Lab in Brazil

Brazilian company Petrobras has partnered with Shell and Senai CIMATEC to develop a production development laboratory (LDP) for pre-salt research and development.
Being built inside Senai CIMATEC Park in the Petrochemical Camaçari Cluster, the LDP will be equipped to allow testing of integrated systems in safe operating conditions similar to Brazilian pre-salt.
The facility will help in assessing the new equipment’s performance prior to its deployment in the field.
Petrobras said an investment of around 254m reais ($50.03m) is planned for the construction of the LDP to meet international standards for market qualification and technical specifications.
The project, which is scheduled for commission in 2024, is funded by Petrobras and Shell with resources from the Research, Development and Innovation clause of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels.
Petrobras noted that the laboratory is important for technology development to allow exploration and production to be more efficient and safer in terms of operations and emissions.
The partners plan to drill a 300m well in the facility. The well will be connected to a flow loop comprising pipes, compressors and pumps that simulates the flow of oil and gas production.
Petrobras said in a statement: “In addition to the infrastructure, the LDP will have a multidisciplinary technical team of masters and doctors with expertise in modelling and reliability analysis, advanced engineering, and expertise in computer simulations, materials and examination of failures and processes.
“The tests enable the entire chain of the oil and gas industry to take advantage: subsea, topsides, production operations, lifting and flowing oil from the seabed, and processing.”
