CNOOC Starts Production at New Gas Development in China’s Bohai Sea

CNOOC Ltd., majority held by state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), said Tuesday it has put onstream a new gas project in the Bohai Sea in northern China, expecting to achieve a peak rate of 5,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd).
CNOOC Ltd. plans 10 development wells in the Bozhong 19-6 Gas Field 13-2 Block 5 Well Site Development Project, which sits at a water depth of 23 meters (75.5 feet) in the central part of the sea, it said in a press release.
The company, which holds a 100 percent stake in the project, aims to reach peak production in 2026.
Last year the Bozhong 19-6 Condensate Gas Field Phase I Development Project, which has a declared proven reserves of over 100 billion cubic meters (35.3 billion cubic feet), began production, as announced by CNOOC Ltd. November 14, 2023.
Expecting to achieve peak production of 37,000 boepd in 2024, phase 1 targets 65 development wells including 42 production ones.
“The project is the first condensate gas field with a proved in-place volume of over 200 billion cubic meters [70.6 billion cubic feet] natural gas that has been put into operation in Bohai Bay, relying on the Bozhong-Kenli Oilfields Onshore Power Project”, CNOOC Ltd. president and chief executive Zhou Xinhuai said in a statement at the time. “The gas field will supply stable clean energy to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Bohai Rim region, and contribute to the low-carbon and high-quality development of the company”.
Bohai, which CNOOC Ltd. calls the biggest oil production area in China, is estimated to hold reserves of two billion boe as of the end of 2023, according to the company. Bohai averaged 599,847 boe in daily production last year, according to CNOOC Ltd.
The Bozhong 19-6 Gas Field 13-2 Block 5 Well Site Development Project is the second project announced by CNOOC Ltd. to have been started up this year. On February 5 it said the Suizhong 36-1/Luda 5-2 Oilfield Secondary Adjustment and Development Project started production, which is expected to peak at 30,300 bpd next year.
“It is the largest secondary development and adjustment project in offshore China”, CNOOC Ltd. said in a news release at the time. “Guided by the concept of region-wide development, the project has set a good example for the sustainable development of offshore producing oil and gas fields.
“Besides, it is developed relying on onshore power supply, which enables the project to consume green electricity generated onshore, thus steadily promoting the green and low-carbon development of offshore oil and gas resources”.
CNOOC Ltd. plans 118 development wells including 81 production ones at the Suizhong 36-1/Luda 5-2 Oilfield Secondary Adjustment and Development Project, which sits at a water depth of 30 meters (98.4 feet) in Bohai’s Liaodong Bay, according to the company.
Besides the two projects in Bohai now put into production this year, CNOOC Ltd. plans to start up an additional two projects in Bohai in 2024—the Bozhong 19-2 Oilfield Development Project and the Suizhong 36-2 Oilfied 36-2 Block Development Project.
