Work Continues on Iraq’s First Solar Energy Project

The first concrete step toward increasing Iraq’s dependence on renewable energy sources to generate power is the start of the country’s first solar energy plant.
In light of the country’s growing need for power, the government is taking this move to diversify its energy sources and attain sustainability in the energy sector.
The Karbala station project, Iraq’s first solar energy plant with a-300 megawatt producing capacity, is still under construction, according to a statement cited by the state news agency (INA).
The project, which is being carried out in the Karbala governorate over a vast area estimated to be 4,000,000 square meters, signifies a major shift in Iraq’s dependence on renewable energy sources.
About 500,000 solar panels will be built as part of the country’s first solar energy project, with 40,000 of those panels anticipated to be put in place by February 2025, according to the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity.
Such an achievement is part of a larger strategy that aims to produce 525 megawatts of solar energy in different Iraqi governorates.
The project’s first phase would be completed in one year in order to improve sustainability and lessen reliance on imported fuel, according to instructions given by the Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel.
